Virginia Tech is inviting applications for an Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology (9-month, tenure track position, 50% Research, 50% Extension) to be located at the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center (ESAREC; https://www.arec.vaes.vt.edu/arec/eastern-shore.html); which is located on the Virginia portion of the Delmarva Peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The position’s tenure home will reside in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences (SPES) at Virginia Tech.
Responsibilities include the development of an innovative, nationally recognized research and extension Plant Pathology program on a diversity of vegetable (snap bean, potato, tomato, sweet corn), grain (wheat and corn), and oilseed crops (soybean and rapeseed) of importance to the Eastern Shore. Extension programming will assist producers with preventing and managing diseases while increasing yields and crop quality. Research initiatives should utilize innovative technologies to develop management practices as the successful candidate will be active within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ SmartFarm Innovation Network (https://caia.cals.vt.edu/index.html). The candidate will work with faculty in other units and colleges to develop integrated pest management strategies, potentially including machine learning and artificial intelligence, with applications such as early disease detection, improved management of pesticide applications, and reduction of disease severity. The incumbent is expected to secure funding to develop and implement a sustainable and dynamic research program, and recruit and mentor graduate students. Research should be applicable to grower needs and publishable in refereed journals.
Required Qualifications: Prior to employment, candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Plant Pathology or related field. Candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills and have the ability to work well with producers, farm consultants, researchers, extension agents, agribusiness personnel, and government agencies in order to develop and deliver educational programs. Scholarship will be demonstrated through peer-reviewed research and extension publications, recruiting and advising graduate students, and securing extramural funding to support research and extension programs.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of production agriculture is expected. Demonstrated ability to write proposals and obtain extramural funding.
