This position is located in Mobile, Alabama at the Auburn University Marine Research and Extension Center with work being done in the Mississippi Sound and Mobile Bay.
This is a three year limited term appointment funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.
This position will be responsible for assisting the Pl in the production and maintenance of “off-bottom oyster grown out areas.” Monitoring of these sites will be completed in order to determine the success of oyster survival and reproduction. Techniques to reduce predation specifically by oyster drills will also be implemented. The goal of this project is to help to determine techniques that increase the sustainability of Alabama oyster reefs. The project will also determine how best to reduce predation on oyster populations. This position will require time spent in the field where working conditions can occasionally be wet and/or muddy, lab, office and meetings. The selected candidate should be comfortable in all.
Essential Functions
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Assist PI with the building of the grow-out area and implementation of the predator control structures
Assist in the completion of the necessary permitting to get the project up and running
Assist with monitoring for survivability, reproduction, predation, and larval settlement after grow-out areas are completed
Maintain records/databases and files of research; assist with grant reporting
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
