Mississippi State University seeks to hire a Department Head for the Department of Animal & Dairy Sciences (ADS). The head of ADS provides strategic leadership and vision for its research, outreach and training of next generation professionals. ADS embodies the land-grant mission of Mississippi State University, providing teaching, research and service to meet the needs of students, stakeholders and clientele across the state, region, nation and world in animal and dairy sciences.
The Head will have a full-time, 12-month, administrative appointment and will provide overall leadership, direction, vision and administration for undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension and service activities. The Head is responsible for coordination of budget and personnel management functions, facilities, hiring of new faculty and administrative staff, diversity recruitment, and promoting faculty/staff professional development. Moreover, the head is expected to establish and maintain working relationships with Research, Extension and Experiment Centers throughout the state, federal and state government agencies, professional societies, and alumni. The Head will also serve as a liaison between the Department of Animal and Dairy Science, and industry partners within the food animal and equine industries, Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation, and other allied industry stakeholder groups. The successful candidate will have a vision for the direction of the department and appreciation for its diversity of disciplines. The Head of the ADS Department is responsible to the Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Director, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, and the Director, MSU Extension Service.
Qualifications: Candidates should have an earned doctorate in an appropriate area in Animal or Dairy Sciences, or a related field with credentials and experience to qualify for the rank of professor with tenure and graduate faculty membership at MSU.
Preferred Qualifications: The candidate must demonstrate a strong recognition of and commitment to Mississippi’s agricultural foundation; a demonstrated ability to work effectively with the academic, agricultural, natural resources and business communities, industry constituents, and federal partners; ability to coordinate and evaluate undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension and service programs; and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. A record of successful leadership and achievement, including the acquisition of public and private resources to develop and expand strong agricultural programs, is also required. The successful candidate should have a thorough familiarity and understanding of the land-grant system and the interrelationship between teaching, research and extension programs. The candidate must possess the vision and experience necessary to lead a complex organization in developing and enhancing its research mission in service to the state, region, and nation as a premier research leader in Animal and Dairy Sciences.

Animal & Dairy Science Department
The department has 17 on‐ and 2 off‐campus faculty members engaged in teaching, research, extension and/or service programs, most of whom carry joint appointments. The programs are supported by 17 support and professional staff. The department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in animal and dairy sciences with approximately 500 undergraduate students. Approximately 30 graduate students are enrolled in Master of Science or Doctoral programs and approximately 15 are enrolled in the Master of Agriculture program. The teaching, research, extension and service programs are supported by state‐of‐the‐art laboratories, equipment and trained personnel. The faculty hold memberships in National and International Societies. The food animal and equine industries are significant contributors to Mississippi’s agricultural economy. The Department is housed in a new Animal and Dairy Sciences building on campus which is adjacent to the Leveck Animal Research Center, an 1100 acre facility with livestock units. In addition, the Bearden Dairy Research Center is located within 12 miles of campus. The new MSU Meat Science and Muscle Biology Laboratory, adjacent to the Animal and Dairy Sciences building, is also under the direction of the Department Head.
